Day 1 of 6
Arrive at Gaya airport / railway station and transfer to Bodh Gaya. Evening visit to the Mahabodhi Temple, sitting in silent meditation beneath the descendant Bodhi tree where the Buddha attained enlightenment.
Walking tour of the international monasteries clustered around Bodh Gaya — Thai, Tibetan, Bhutanese, Japanese, Vietnamese. Cross the Niranjana river to Sujata village (the milkmaid who fed the starving Buddha) and visit the Sujata Stupa.
Drive to Rajgir, the ancient capital of Magadha. Ropeway up to Vishwa Shanti Stupa, then visit Vulture Peak where the Buddha gave many of his most important sermons. Evening at the natural hot springs.
Morning excursion to the Nalanda ruins (UNESCO) — the world's earliest residential university where 10,000 students studied at its peak. Continue to Patna in the afternoon. Evening walk at Gandhi Maidan.
Drive north to Vaishali — believed to be the world's first republic and the site of Buddha's last sermon. Continue across the Ganges to Kushinagar (in UP), where the Buddha attained parinirvana (final passing) in 483 BCE.
Morning at the Ramabhar Stupa (cremation site) and the Wat Thai Kushinagar temple. Afternoon drive to Lucknow airport / railway station for departure.
