Overview

Bodh Gaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree; Nalanda, the world's earliest residential university; Rajgir's hot springs and Jain temples — Bihar is where Indian history, philosophy and spirituality all begin.

Bihar may be one of India's quietest tourist circuits, but it is one of the most consequential in world history. Bodh Gaya is the most sacred site in Buddhism — the Mahabodhi Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marks the exact spot where Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha. The descendant Bodhi tree still stands in the temple courtyard, and pilgrims from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Bhutan, and Myanmar fill the small town year-round. Nalanda, just 90 km away, was the world's first great residential university (5th–12th century CE), with 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers at its peak. The vast brick ruins, now a UNESCO site, stretch over 23 hectares. Nearby Rajgir was the capital of the Magadha kingdom — both the Buddha and Mahavira lived and taught here, and its surrounding hills are dotted with Buddhist stupas, Jain temples, and hot springs. Vaishali — believed to be the world's first republic — and Patna (ancient Pataliputra, capital of the Mauryan empire under Ashoka) complete the picture. For Sikh pilgrims, Takht Sri Patna Sahib marks the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh. A Buddhist Circuit tour through Bihar is one of the most spiritually rewarding journeys in India.
