Overview

Living root bridges, crystal-clear rivers, and the wettest place on earth await in the abode of clouds. Meghalaya is a hidden gem of northeast India where nature has sculpted an otherworldly landscape of limestone caves, plunging waterfalls, and emerald canyons.

Meghalaya — literally 'the abode of clouds' — is northeast India's best-kept secret, a highland of rolling green hills perpetually draped in mist and rain. The state receives some of the highest rainfall on the planet, and this abundance of water has created a landscape of extraordinary beauty: Nohkalikai Falls plunges 340 metres into a turquoise pool, the Dawki River flows so clear that boats appear to float on glass, and underground caverns stretch for kilometres in the Jaintia Hills. The most iconic features are the living root bridges of the Khasi and Jaintia tribes — centuries-old bioengineering marvels where the roots of rubber fig trees have been trained across rivers to form sturdy, growing bridges. The double-decker root bridge at Nongriat requires a 3,500-step descent but rewards visitors with a sight found nowhere else on earth. Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, demonstrates that eco-conscious living is a tradition here, not a trend. Beyond adventure, Meghalaya offers cultural richness — the Khasi matrilineal society, where lineage and property pass through the mother, is one of the few such systems in the world. Local markets bustle with smoked meats, Jadoh rice dishes, and fermented bamboo shoot preparations. Whether you are caving in Krem Mawmluh, kayaking on Umngot River, or simply sitting on a cliff edge watching clouds roll in below you, Meghalaya delivers an experience that is raw, unspoiled, and profoundly moving.
