A Ladakh road trip is one of the most exhilarating experiences a traveller can have in India. But this is no ordinary drive. You will be riding at altitudes above 3,500 metres, crossing passes over 5,300 metres, and spending days in areas with no mobile network or fuel stations. Preparation is everything. Permits You Need
Since 2024, all Indian tourists visiting Ladakh need an Inner Line Permit (ILP). You can apply online through the Ladakh UT administration portal at least 7 days before your trip. The ILP is required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, Hanle, and other areas near the international border. Carry at least four printed copies of your permit, your original ID proof, and photocopies. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) which can be obtained through a registered tour operator in Leh.
Choosing Your Route: Manali vs Srinagar
There are two major road routes to Leh. The Manali-Leh highway (475 km, 1-2 days) is more dramatic and challenging, crossing Rohtang Pass, Baralacha La, Lachalung La, and the famous Tanglang La. It is generally open from mid-June to mid-October. The Srinagar-Leh highway (434 km, 2 days) via Zoji La and Kargil is slightly easier on the body and usually opens by late May. For the best experience, enter via one route and exit via the other.
Acclimatization Is Non-Negotiable
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the biggest risk on a Ladakh trip. Leh itself sits at 3,500 metres, and many passes exceed 5,000 metres. Follow these rules strictly:
- Spend at least two full days in Leh doing nothing strenuous before heading to higher altitudes
- Drink at least 3-4 litres of water daily
- Avoid alcohol completely for the first 48 hours
- Walk slowly, eat light meals, and sleep propped up slightly
- Carry Diamox (acetazolamide) tablets after consulting your doctor before the trip
- Know the symptoms: persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness at rest
- If symptoms worsen, descend immediately. Do not push through AMS.
Bike vs Car
Motorcycles offer an unmatched sense of freedom on Ladakh roads, but they are physically demanding and leave you exposed to weather. Royal Enfield Himalayans and Classic 350s are the most popular rental choices in Manali and Leh. Rental costs range from 1,200 to 2,500 rupees per day. If you are travelling with family or prefer comfort, an SUV like the Mahindra Thar or Toyota Fortuner is the better choice. Self-drive SUV rentals start from around 3,500 rupees per day from operators in Leh. Ensure the vehicle has good ground clearance, as water crossings on the Manali route are common.
Fuel Stations
Fuel availability is one of the biggest concerns. Here is what you need to know:
- On the Manali route, the last reliable fuel station is at Tandi. The next one is in Karu, near Leh. That is a gap of roughly 365 km.
- On the Srinagar route, fuel is available at Kargil, which breaks the journey nicely.
- In Leh, there are multiple petrol pumps, but expect long queues during peak season.
- Carry at least one 10-litre jerry can as backup if riding a motorcycle on the Manali route.

- Layered clothing: thermals, fleece, windproof outer shell
- Waterproof riding jacket and pants (even in summer)
- UV-rated sunglasses and sunscreen SPF 50+
- Riding gloves (waterproof) and sturdy boots

- Headlamp and portable charger (20,000 mAh minimum)
- Bungee cords, cable ties, and basic tool kit for bike trips
- Cash: ATMs in Leh are unreliable. Carry at least 15,000-20,000 rupees in cash.
Mobile Network and Connectivity
Only Airtel and BSNL postpaid connections work reliably in Leh town. Jio has expanded some coverage in 2025-2026, but signal drops outside of Leh. In Nubra Valley, Pangong, and Tso Moriri, expect no mobile network at all. Download offline maps on Google Maps or use the Maps.me app before you leave. Inform your family that you may be unreachable for days at a stretch.
Best Time to Go
The optimal window is mid-June to mid-September. July and August bring warmer days but also occasional rain on the Manali route. September offers the clearest skies and fewer crowds. If you are specifically targeting Pangong or Tso Moriri, aim for late June to early September when the roads are most reliable.
The most important thing about a Ladakh trip is patience. Roads close, weather changes, your body needs time. Build buffer days into your itinerary. Rushing through Ladakh defeats the entire purpose of going.
