Day 1 of 8

Arrive in Haridwar and head down to Har ki Pauri for the famous evening Ganga Aarti — thousands of diyas floating on the river under flickering temple lamps.

Short drive to Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world. Walk the suspension bridges of Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula, browse the bookshops, and end at Triveni Ghat for evening aarti.

Long but spectacular drive across the Garhwal-Kumaon ridge to Kainchi Dham — the small ashram of Neem Karoli Baba, made famous by Steve Jobs and other Western devotees. Darshan and an early night at a guesthouse near the ashram.

Short drive to Nainital, the gem of the Kumaon. Boat on the emerald-green Naini Lake, walk Mall Road, and visit Naina Devi Temple beside the lake.

Take the cable car up to Snow View Point for views of Nanda Devi, walk to Tiffin Top, then drive to the birding paradise of Pangot for an afternoon walk through pine and oak forest.

Drive across the deodar-forested ridges to Ranikhet, a quiet ex-British cantonment. Visit Chaubatia Gardens (apple-orchard country) and the saffron-and-gold Jhula Devi temple.

Drive south to Jim Corbett National Park, India's oldest tiger reserve. Afternoon jeep safari into the Bijrani / Jhirna zones of the park — tigers, elephants, sloth bear and nearly 600 species of birds.

After breakfast, drive back to Haridwar and drop at the railway station / Dehradun airport for your onward journey, with one final glimpse of the Ganga as you cross the bridge.
