Nine days through the storybook heart of Rajasthan — Jaipur's pink palaces, Ranthambore's tigers, Pushkar's holy lake, two unhurried nights in Jodhpur's blue city, and Jaisalmer's golden desert. Forts, camels, tigers and a thousand stories of Rajput valor.

Day 1 of 9

Arrive in the Pink City and start with its three city-centre signatures — the Hawa Mahal's pink lattice facade, the still-royal City Palace, and the giant astronomical instruments of the UNESCO-listed Jantar Mantar.

Morning at Amber Fort with its mirror-mosaic Sheesh Mahal, then on to Jaigarh for the giant Jaivana cannon. End the day with sunset views over the city from Nahargarh Fort.

Morning drive south-east to Ranthambore National Park — once the hunting grounds of the Maharajas, today one of India's premier tiger reserves. After lunch and check-in, head straight into the park on an afternoon jeep safari, scanning the dhok forest and ravines for tigers, leopards and the rich supporting cast of crocodile, sambar and sloth bear.

Drive west to the holy lakeside town of Pushkar, home to the only major Brahma temple in India. Evening at the ghats as priests perform aarti by the holy lake.

Drive west to Jodhpur, the Blue City. Spend the afternoon at the towering Mehrangarh Fort — one of India's most spectacular — and the white-marble Jaswant Thada cenotaph below.

A full day to slow down in the Blue City. Morning walking tour through the indigo lanes below Mehrangarh, with stops at the stepped Toorji ka Jhalra and the bustling Sardar Market under the Clock Tower. Afternoon excursion to Mandore Gardens — the original capital of Marwar — and a sunset rooftop dinner overlooking the lit-up fort.

Drive west across the Thar desert plain to Jaisalmer, the Golden City. Evening visit to the inhabited Sonar Quila and the carved sandstone Patwon ki Haveli.

Quiet morning in Jaisalmer's old city, then drive west to the Sam sand dunes for a camel safari at sunset, a desert dinner under the stars and a cultural evening of Rajasthani folk music.

After a slow breakfast, drop at Jaisalmer airport / railway station — or transfer to Jodhpur for an onward train / flight. Carry home the gold of the desert and the blue of Jodhpur in equal measure.
