Day 1 of 8
Pickup at Naharlagun / Itanagar and drive ~6 hrs to Ziro Valley — the UNESCO-tentative home of the Apatani tribe. Evening walk through a paddy-fish farming field at sunset.
Full day exploring the Apatani heartland — Hong, Hari, and Hija villages, famous for the elderly women's distinctive facial tattoos and bamboo nose plugs. Afternoon walk to the Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary edge.
Drive east along the Subansiri river to Daporijo — a sleepy town in the Tagin tribal heartland. Visit a traditional wood-shingle village in the afternoon.
Long, dramatic drive across mountain passes to Mechuka — a remote valley at 6,000 ft, 29 km from the Tibet border. Sometimes called the 'last town', it has only opened to civilian tourism in recent years.
Visit the 400-year-old Samten Yongcha Buddhist Monastery, walk through the Memba tribal village, and spend the afternoon at the Siyom riverside. Evening bonfire under one of India's clearest night skies.
Drive south through the Siang valley to Aalo. Visit the Donyi-Polo Mission and the local market in the afternoon.
Drive south along the Siang river (the upper Brahmaputra) to Pasighat — Arunachal's oldest town. Optional river rafting trip on the Siang in the afternoon.
Drive across the Bogibeel bridge (India's longest road-rail bridge) into Assam to Dibrugarh airport / railway station for departure.
