Overview

One of the oldest living cities in the world, Varanasi pulses with sacred rituals, ancient temples, and the mesmerising Ganga Aarti. Uttar Pradesh also houses the Taj Mahal, Sarnath, and the epic city of Lucknow.

Varanasi defies easy description. Situated on the banks of the Ganges, it has been a centre of learning, faith, and culture for over 3,000 years. The city's 84 ghats cascade down to the river in a maze of stone steps, each with its own story — Dashashwamedh Ghat hosts the spectacular nightly Ganga Aarti, where priests wield flaming brass lamps in synchronised choreography that draws thousands. At Manikarnika Ghat, funeral pyres burn around the clock, a stark and profound reminder of the Hindu belief that dying here grants moksha — liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Beyond the ghats, the old city is a labyrinth of narrow lanes (galis) that conceal silk-weaving workshops, centuries-old sweet shops, and temples to every imaginable deity. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the spiritual anchor of Varanasi. Nearby Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, offers serene stupas and a world-class archaeological museum. Uttar Pradesh extends the narrative — the Taj Mahal in Agra stands as humanity's greatest monument to love, Lucknow serves up kebabs and Nawabi architecture, and Prayagraj hosts the Kumbh Mela, the largest gathering of humans on earth. A journey through UP is a journey through the layered soul of India.
