Overview

Hyderabad's Charminar and biryani, Srisailam's Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, the Somasila pilgrim cruise, Warangal's Kakatiya temples, and the rugged Nallamala forest — Telangana blends Nizami heritage with deep South Indian temple traditions.

Telangana, India's youngest state (formed in 2014), is anchored by Hyderabad's Nizami grandeur but extends far beyond the capital. The state is dotted with rock-cut temples, Kakatiya-era stepwells, and the Nallamala forest range — one of the oldest in India. Srisailam, perched above the Krishna river in the Nallamala hills, is home to the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga — one of Hinduism's 12 holiest Shiva shrines — and the Bhramaramba Shakti Peetha temple right beside it, a rare combined Shiva-Shakti pilgrimage. The Krishna river here is dammed into the vast Srisailam reservoir, making the site uniquely scenic. Just downstream, Somasila reservoir offers cruise pilgrimages along its quiet waters past forested banks. Warangal preserves the 12th-century Kakatiya dynasty's masterpieces — the Thousand Pillar Temple, the Warangal Fort gateways, and the Ramappa Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its 'floating brick' construction). Bhongir's monolithic rock fort, the Bhadrachalam Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple, and Kuntala Falls in Adilabad complete a state with deep historical, spiritual and natural diversity that goes far past the Charminar.
