The place

The Nabataean tombs of Hegra, the sandstone canyons of AlUla, the Edge of the World cliffs and old-town Jeddah — newly open Saudi Arabia is one of travel's great frontiers.

AlUla is the headline — Hegra (Madain Saleh), Saudi's first UNESCO site, with more than a hundred Nabataean rock-cut tombs cousin to Petra, plus the mud-brick AlUla old town and the natural sculpture of Elephant Rock glowing at sunset. The desert around it has become a stage for art and stargazing. Riyadh, the modern capital, mixes the restored mud-brick palaces of Diriyah with the dramatic Edge of the World escarpment a short drive away. On the Red Sea coast, Jeddah's UNESCO Al-Balad old town of coral-stone merchant houses leads to a corniche and some of the world's finest diving reefs. Saudi only opened to tourist visas recently, so it still feels genuinely undiscovered.
