The place

The grand mosque and souqs of Muscat, the apricot dunes of the Wahiba Sands, turquoise wadis and clifftop forts — Oman is Arabia's most authentic and scenic corner.

Muscat is a low-rise capital of white mosques and old harbours — the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House and the buzzing Muttrah Souq along the Corniche. Beyond the city, the interior holds the old capital of Nizwa with its round fort and Friday goat market, and the mountain villages of Jebel Akhdar terraced with roses and pomegranates. The landscapes are the real draw: the rippling apricot dunes of the Wahiba Sands for a desert-camp night under the stars, and emerald canyons like Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid where you swim between palm-fringed pools. Far to the south, Salalah turns green and misty during the khareef monsoon — a different Arabia entirely.

Indian passport holders need an Oman e-visa — apply online in advance.

Dress modestly; cover shoulders and knees, and women carry a scarf for the Grand Mosque.

A 4x4 is needed for the Wahiba Sands and some wadis — use a guided transfer or driver.
