The place

Turquoise lagoons ringed by coral reef, sugar-cane hills and dormant volcanoes, and some of the Indian Ocean's most relaxed beach resorts - Mauritius is the classic honeymoon and family island escape.

Mauritius sits in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, a volcanic island fringed almost entirely by a coral reef that turns the surrounding sea into a calm, swimmable lagoon. The north (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches) is the resort and nightlife hub; the wilder west and south (Le Morne, Tamarin) draw surfers, kitesurfers and those after dramatic clifftop sunsets; and the centre rises into tea-green highlands, crater lakes and the strange seven-coloured earths of Chamarel. Beyond the beach, the island rewards the curious - the UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant peninsula, the sacred crater lake of Grand Bassin with its towering Hindu statues, the colonial capital of Port Louis and its Central Market, swimming with dolphins off Tamarin Bay, and underwater walks or catamaran cruises out to Île aux Cerfs. Mauritian culture is a warm blend of Indian, Creole, French, Chinese and African influences, and that mix shows up everywhere - especially on the plate.

Good to know

Before you go.

Indian passport holders get visa-free entry to Mauritius for tourism (up to 60 days) - carry confirmed return tickets and hotel bookings.

Currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR); cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.

Drive is on the left; most visitors use hotel transfers, taxis or a hired car with driver.

Reef shoes help on rocky entries; strong sun calls for reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.

Avoid the Jan-Mar cyclone peak if you want guaranteed calm beach weather.
