Kazakhstan stretches from the Caspian Sea to the Altai Mountains, spanning a territory bigger than Western Europe. Almaty — the former capital — nestles against the snow-capped Zailiyskiy Alatau range of the Tien Shan. The Kok Tobe gondola offers city panoramas, and the Medeo high-altitude ice rink is a short drive up the mountain. The country's most dramatic natural sight is Charyn Canyon — a 150 km gorge often called Kazakhstan's Grand Canyon — located 3 hours from Almaty. Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy (with its underwater forest) are equally spectacular. In the south, Turkestan's Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is a UNESCO site and a key Silk Road pilgrimage centre. Astana (officially renamed Nur-Sultan) is the purpose-built modern capital with the Bayterek Tower and Khan Shatyr tent.
