The place

Baku's flame towers, Gobustan's ancient petroglyphs, Absheron's fire temples, the mountain village of Lahij, and the Caspian Sea - Azerbaijan is a surprising East-meets-West gem.

Azerbaijan sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Its capital Baku is a city of contrasts - the UNESCO-listed medieval Old City (Icheri Sheher) sits just blocks from the ultra-modern Flame Towers and Heydar Aliyev Center (designed by Zaha Hadid). Day trips from Baku go to Gobustan - a UNESCO site with 6,000-year-old petroglyphs and nearby mud volcanoes (Azerbaijan has more than half the world's total). Yanar Dag, a hillside that has been on fire for over 60 years thanks to natural gas seeps, is a short drive north. The Ateshgah Fire Temple reminds of the country's pre-Islamic Zoroastrian heritage. The mountain region around Sheki and Lahij offers Caucasus scenery, coppersmith villages, and traditional baklava. Azerbaijani cuisine - plov, dolma, and qutabs - is a highlight.
